Roberto Martinez earned his BFA, with a focus in Photography, from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 2016. As a first generation Mexican-American, Roberto is concerned with the deterioration of his families property in their native country. His photography reflects this deterioration and a fascination with the rich history of Elgin. Roberto started as an Artist-Intern with SSSA in 2013 and later became the Facilities Assistant prior to becoming Assistant Director in 2014. Through SSSA, Roberto coordinates the Artist-Intern program, curates visual art exhibitions, and manages various interdisciplinary happenings. During his time at SAIC, he worked as an Installation Gallery Assistant at Student Union Galleries. In 2014, Roberto received an Individual Artist Grant from the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission. In 2015, he received the Endsley Memorial Fellowship from the photography department at SAIC.
